Week 39- BEST BIRTHDAY EVER!!!

Ok. So i really dont even know how i am going to write this email...because SO much happened!!!
So we have been preparing Ginia and her daughter Yuleiki for baptism right, and everything went great with them. Theyre amazing and were so excited and just couldnt wait! So we werent worried about them at all.
Who we were worried about was Griselda. She has been reading and praying and has said always that she feels so good about everything, but doesnt have the desire to be baptized. So we really didnt know how to help her or what we could do to help her accept the answer from God that she had gotten. We werent able to see her at all this past week so we had just been calling her and reminding her to read and everything.
We have felt for so long that Griselda was so ready to be baptized - it was just the fear of taking this step that has been holding her back. So we wanted her to have another baptismal interview on saturday, done by the Zone Leaders, to help her realize that she really is ready. So we had planned to have it saturday morning but Griselda ended up not coming to Cartago and the ZLs didnt want to go to her house, since its far away. So we ended up taking the bus to her house to see what was going on with her. So we read JS History and we talked to her about how shes felt about everything. She said she has felt really good but theres just something that has been holding her back, and shes been waiting for a sign from God to know that its all true. So then we read D&C 6:15, 22-23 (go read it). And then she just sat there....and said, ¨Ive been waiting so long for a sign...could it really be that feeling good is the answer?¨ we said YES. And so we asked her if she would want to have her baptismal interview again, and she said yes. We had the baptismal interview questions out and so she took the list and looked at them, and just said, ¨Estoy preparada.¨ or, ¨Im prepared.¨ We could not even believe she had said that. So then we called the ZLs and we coordinated to have griselda come to cartago and we would all meet in the church. Griselda called us later to say that she couldnt come, but we were not going to let that happen. So we told her we would go eat after to celebrate my birthday (haha) and so she finally came. Elder Toledo (who was with me in nicoya for 5 months and is now the ZL here) gave her the interview, and we were So nervous the entire time we were waiting.  Then he FINALLY came out, and he just said, ¨Do you have a baptismal form?¨ And then we just ran into the room where Griselda was and she was just crying. So we hugged and hugged and she said, ¨I got my answer.¨ I dont think i have ever felt so much joy in my life. I couldnt even believe it - we have worked so hard to help her get her answer and she finally recognized it. Of course WE didnt do a thing - it was the Lord and the Spirit. She agreed to be baptized the next day.
She later told us that elder toledo had her kneel down right there, and ask in prayer every single specific question about the church: About the Book of Mormon, if this was when she should be baptized, etc, and she said that after she asked the questions, she just started crying and couldnt stop.
So that was the biggest miracle i have seen. It was so amazing.
So the next day, Sunday and my birthday, was amazing. The elders had a baptism before church, then Ginia and Yuleiki got baptized right after church. Ginia bore her testimony after and was crying, saying how amazing she felt. Then Griselda got baptized at 5 oclock in the afternoon (she was gonna have her baptism before church but the member who she wanted to do the baptism couldnt until that time). It was so amazing. I couldnt even believe i was seeing griselda in white, finally ready to take that step into the Church of Jesus Christ.
So through all these amazing events, my birthday was the last thing on my mind haha but people were nice about it and all :) And i felt all your love! It is a birthday that i will NEVER forget. Full of miracles and people taking steps necearry to recieve la vida eterna! I have no doubt that they will never fall away. They are so strong, and truly converted to the restored gospel.
So after all of that me and hna chatwin were so exhausted and could barely walk haha. And to add more craziness to my birthday, that was when they were supposed to call us for changes. I was told i would be training and that hna chatwin would be leaving but then we never got the call, and then we found out the no one in the entire mission had changes! They got postponed or something, we really have no idea but we are all so confused. We have a meeting with the entire mission on friday with Elder Duncan, the area president, so we will see what happens!
So today i was reading in Alma 31, and i felt like it was talking to me! My mission is awesome and im really happy, but sometimes we just need a little comfort from the Lord. And in verses 30-33, Alma, the prophet, is just asking heavenly father to comfort him in Christ. I loved that, because even the prophet got sad and needed comfort from our heavenly father. and we can ALWAYS ask for that comfort, and he will always give it to us :)
We went to walmart yesterday. it was overwhelming. Hahaha
So a volcano is erupting in a nearby city....but no worries we are not affected!
Also i will now be writing on mondays again! Dont ask why, but its changed back to mondays.
Ok well i love you all! Sigan adelante!
Con mucho amor, Hermana Geis

Week 38 - The Broken Closet

Ok so this week was really really crazy.
We had a lot of disappointments, but also a lot of miracles. Let me just tell you about one of our days, that was really, really bad hahaha.

So we've been working a lot with Griselda - the 21 year old whose awesome, but does not trust in the answer she has already gotten about the church!  She says that she feels really good about everything.  So we always say," That's the spirit telling you its true!"  And she's like, "Yeah I know...¨, but she doesn't feel the desire to get baptized, or she doesn't understand it.

So anyways, we had planned to visit with her on Friday night.  She lives far away, so we always have to take the bus at 6:30, which is the last bus. So we were visiting lots of people in another area and we have to take a bus from that area to the center of Cartago first.  So we got to the center at like 6:25. So we literally RAN through all of Cartago to make it to the bus.  But when we got to the bus stop, the bus was JUST pulling away!!  We were so upset!  So we had to take a different bus that doesn't go to her house, and then take a taxi, and basically it was really stressful.

We had invited a member to come to Griselda's house (we usually meet in the house of the member, but we wanted to have it in her house) and the member brought her entire family over! So, the lesson didn't go as we had hoped, and so we went home still feeling a little stressed.

Then when we got home we found that our closet had completely collapsed and it looked like a tornado had passed through our room!  As we were trying to fix the closet, it got worse and collapsed even more.  So then we just sat down on the floor and laughed until our stomachs hurt.

So because we had no closet, Hna Chatwin and I had to go to the Mission office yesterday to get a new closet haha.  Since we were in San Jose, we went to CHILIS restaurant at a Mall nearby...let's just say we looked like we had never seen a Mall or a sit-down restaurant or American food. It was pretty amazing.  And if we hadn't had to go to the Mission office, I wouldn't have gotten a birthday package my family sent me!  Who knew that a broken closet could result in such fun things!. So yay for the broken closet :)
So anyways, the week was full of things like that haha, but we also found a lot of prepared people!  But here's the biggest miracle of all. On Sunday, we had 7 INVESTIGATORS IN CHURCH. That is the most we have ever had on our missions!  It's a lot for here haha. And we didn't go for a single one of them...each one came with a member!  It was so amazing. We both just wanted to cry of happiness in Sacrament meeting haha. Its crazy how things like that just make you so happy on the mission - because that's why we are here!  To help people come unto Christ. And it's by keeping their commitments and making those changes in their lives that they are able to do so.
This coming week, on Sunday, (my birthday!)  Gina and Yuleiki are going to be baptized!  Hna Chatwin and I always say how this is going to be the most spiritual baptism ever, because Ginia is so excited and so ready. Our District Leader said that when they were doing her baptismal interview, she just started crying because she has changed so much and is so grateful for that. She used to have a really strong character or negative attitude, bad language, and really unhappy.  Now she just has such a bright countenance and is so happy!  She's like halfway done with the Book of Mormon, is inviting her friends to learn about the Church, and is just amazing. We are so excited for her - and I've never seen anyone so excited for their baptism.
This Thursday we had a Multizone conference!  Elder Alonso, second counselor in the Area Presidency, came.  He's amazing.  He told us some crazy spiritual things and we learned a lot.  We learned a lot about faith - something that we have been trying really hard to work on. And I really believe that is why we saw miracles on Sunday!  Because we had faith and were exactly obedient.
So we have an investigator named Julia - she is so awesome. She is reading lots in the Book of Mormon and feels that i'ts true and everything, but is scared to go to another church. She had us over for dinner last night and we were talking about everything.  It turns out that all her kids were baptized in another church except for her and her husband. We asked her, why didn't you two get baptized?  And she said, I don't know, we just didn't....and we wanted to get married in a church before we get baptized (they're married, just not by a church.)

So we were like, "why haven't you gotten married by the church then?"  And she said, "I don't know, we just haven't felt it."  And then we pulled out a picture of the temple and said that it's probably because God wants you guys to get married here!!  And we explained eternal marriage and she said, ¨so we have to get baptized before we can get married here?¨ So basically we have so much hope for her and even though it may not be right now, she is definitely going to join the church one day and have an eternal family!
Ok well thank you all for all of your support!  Keep trusting in the Lord and always read the scriptures for strength. I love you all!

Week 37- Spiritually (and Physically) Fed

Hello everyone!
Well this past week was good! Visiting lots of people and learning lots. Hermana chatwin and i (theres your proper grammar dad ;) ) are really realizing our purpose as missionaries more. We have realized how we should feel about the work and the people and how we shouldnt feel - we shouldnt feel stressed, pressured, or rushed - we should feel at peace with everything. God doesnt want us to feel stressed, and a lot of missionaries forget about that! We have been focusing on our priorities and what the Lord really wants us to do. Last night we had the option of visiting a bunch of different people close by, or just going to the house of the investigator Griselda who lives far away but we are preparing for baptism. We felt like we should go with Griselda, even though that meant only having one lesson, etc etc. But wow it was so inspired that we went there. We had such a spiritual lesson - probably the best ive ever had on my mission. We were completely focused on her and we really followed the spirit, and we really helped her understand how she is going to recieve her answer. She has her baptismal date for this weekend, but she says that she doesnt feel ready. So we are praying a lot for her so that we can help her feel what God wants her to do.
A cool experience happened last week - we were walking to an appointment and i saw a lady on the side of the road with a little girl. For some reason, the thought came into my mind, That woman is a daughter of God. And God wants us to talk to all of his children to help them come unto him. That thought came really strongly into my mind, but i didnt stop to talk to her because we were hurrying to another house. But i was feeling bad that i didnt talk to her, and then like an hour later we were talking with someone outside of their house and she passed by me! So i excused myself from who we were talking with and ran after her! Haha i knew that God wanted me to talk to her if he gave me two chances. She was then with two of her sons, and they said we could pass by her house any time. So then i told my comp what happened and we both felt like we should go right then. Luckily her house was really close and we saw where she went, and we went and had a really really good lesson with her and her family. So that was a good lesson - if we feel we should talk to someone we really need to. Because heavenly Father isnt always going to give us that second chance.
So on sunday i was the fullest i have ever been in my life....we ate a really yummy lunch of arroz con pollo and frijoles, with arroz con leche for dessert, and we were breaking our fast so we ate a lot and left feeling extremely full. Then we went to recent converts house who are an older couple, and they had invited us earlier to come and eat soup, but when we got there we were like, We just wanted to pass by and say hi! And she said, Oh you dont want any soup...okay.... so we had to say, No of course we want some! So she gave us a bunch of soup and it was delicious but so painful to eat. Oh my i dont think ive ever been so full.
So weve been working with Ginia and Yuleiki, a mom and her daughter who i wrote about them coming to church and Ginia getting a blessing. Well ginia is so ready to be baptized and wants to do it as soon as possible, and last week we moved up the date for this sunday, the 8th, and of course the day before church they all got violently ill! Throwing up and all these crazy things. Satan will do anything to push back baptisms! But we know that they will still get baptized and that everything will be alright. They are so prepared and excited to take this step. Ginia just loves the church and the book of mormon and everything, and whenever we talk about it she is just so happy.
Hermana Chatwin and I have realized that we are here to help people prepare to meet God. Everything we do is centered on the plan of salvation. That is why we are here on the earth, to prepare to return to live with God. Thats the only important thing - becoming more like Jesus Christ and growing closer to our heavenly father.
Well thank you all for everything and i love you lots! Have a great week!

Week 36- Halfway Mark

Hello everybody!
This week was reaalllyy good. We worked super hard and visited a ton of people and felt really good about what we did. We are continuing to see miracles everyday. Dissappointments everyday as well, but the miracles outweigh everything else. Everytime a person rejects the gospel or decides they dont want any more, we find someone else who is prepared. We just have to declare the gospel clearly to everyone so that we are not held accountable for their decision, and so that they can understand the choice they are making.
This week i complete 9 months! The halfway mark. Honestly thats so weird. Some might think, only halfway? 9 more months? but no. The second half just flies by even more than the first, and it kind of scares me! Haha but it is exciting to have made it this far! ;)
How you know youve been in the mission for 9 months:
-You can honestly say your favorite movie is Joseph Smith: Prophet of the Restoration
-You have no idea about current music, movies, politics, or anything at all (which is a blessing really!)
-Youve forgotten how to speak correctly in your native language
(we were visiting a blind guy a few weeks ago and when he heard my spanish he thought i was from guatamala...woohoo!)
-You feel weird when you dont eat rice and beans
-You forgot what its like to wear pants
-You know without a doubt that this is Christs true church and are so happy to be partaking of the blessings that we are able to recieve because of the gospel! :)
Theres lots more, but those are the basics ;)
Me and hermana chatwin have a lot of people that we are preparing to be baptized in march. One hermana, Ginia and her daughter yuleki, are on date for my birthday :) They came to church on sunday and Ginia loved it, and afterwards she was talking to some people about her son and just broke down crying, because her son is involved in a lot of bad things and he treats her really badly. So we ended up having an hermano give her a priesthood blessing. It was so amazing to feel the spirit that was there. And it was also amazing to feel the support of the members - that guy had never met her in his life, and gave a blessing so specific and personal for her. She said that she cant wait to be baptized :)
Yesterday was a fun pday! We ordered subway (yes, ordered - they have people on motorcycles that bring the food how awesome is that) and watched The Testaments, another mission classic. Then we went with a member and made skirts with the fabric that we picked out! So fun. Shes gonna make us like three each. Yay for more skirts!
I have found out some great news from nicoya: Gustavo is now the Ward Mission Leader! Like what?!?! I am so shocked and unbelievably happy for them. Jakeline is a counselor in the primary and is loving it. (this family got baptized my first weekend in the mission and i fought the whole 8 months i was in nicoya to keep them active!) They are going to be interviewed this week to go to the temple! And i will be here to go with them! :) So happy!!
Well everyone, thanks for you support! I love you all and this gospel is true! Thank you for everything!

Week 35

Hello everyone! I hope all is well :)
Things are still going good in cartago. Its still really cold...but good! :)
On thursday we had a zone conference (elder toledo who was in nicoya with me for 5 months is now my zone leader haha) and Presidente Cordon, who used to be a mission president in el salvador and who took the place of president wilkinson for a couple weeks came and talked to us about what we can do to be better missionaries. It was really good. Those meetings always makes us feel a little guilty for the things that we are not doing so great haha but they help us be motivated to be better! :) Theres so many things that go in to being a missionary, but more than anything its about giving your all to the Lord. Your heart, might, mind, and strength. And as human beings we dont want to give everything up. But its necessary to be able to be a successful missionary. The only thing we can do is getter better day by day and give a little more each day. Some days i havent felt good because i know i didnt give it my all, but i know that ive done okay when i feel peaceful at the end of the day, and when i feel like the Lord is proud of me. Thats all we need to know, if the Lord is proud of us. Thats all that matters.
We are teaching a 21 year old girl named Griselda. She is awesome. She was a reference from a member, and we have been teaching her in the members home. She lives like 30 minutes away in bus so it takes like the whole night when we go to teach her because of the bus schedule but its worth it! She has a baptismal date for the 7th of march. We have a ton of promising investigatros for march, but we need to improve our daily contact with them to really help them progress! Because really we need to have daily contact with them to help answer their doubts and everything. And more than anything we need to pray for the Lord to help them!
Time is going by so fast. Im about to complete half of my mission. Its scary because i know that the second half goes by a lot faster! And i have so much to learn and so much to improve - thats why all missionaries say it goes by too fast because we just want to change and grow and theres not enough time haha! But i know that conversion and change is a lifelong process, and that im learning a lot of things that will help me for the rest of my life.
Well i hope that you all have a great week and that you can share the gospel with someone. We have been teaching lots of member references in the members home and it really is such a big difference. I know that that is how we can best bring souls unto christ.
I love you all! :)

Week 34- Cartago!

Hello everyone!
Well this week was really good! It feels like I havent been in Nicoya for like a year, its really weird. I called my converts yesterday on Pday (we can do that now :D) and everythings good with them! But i feel like im in a different country than them haha. Jakeline was sustained as a counselor in the Primary Presidency on sunday!! :) Sooo happy for her.

So we have been seeing lots of miracles in Cartago! We´ve been finding people who are really prepared to accept the gospel. But it is so crazy to see how fast satan works on people - the first visit they are awesome and want to get baptized and all these things, and then the next day they dont want anything. It is so sad to see. But its also their own decision - we cant force them to do anything. We just have to keep following the spirit and trusting in the Lord, and focusing on the people who are willing to accept the gospel and follow the answer that they recieve.

I just love my comp! We have been having lots of fun together. And we love teaching together - we just have the same vision of what we need to teach and its just really good. I miss nicoya and everyone un monton but I really like Cartago! :) its so different though. Here´s some things that ive seen that im not used to:
-American fast food
-People exercising
-Stylish clothes
-etc etc etc

Haha even the sense of humor is different here than in nicoya.
And of course ive been freezing. I had to buy jackets and sweaters yesterday...where am i?!

Going to the ward on sunday was suuuper weird, because its a lot bigger and a lot more like the wards in the states organization wise and everything. But it was really good! And the converts that have gotten baptized recently are just golden. And the members are really strong as well. But again people have a lot more money here so its different!
We get fed a lot more here which is also weird, but good! We walk a lot but also take a lot of buses, because lots of people live super far away.
Our mission president is really sick :( hes in the states right now getting surgery and treatment for cancer. It was amazing because at first he refused to leave costa rica to get treatment. he said that theres too much work to do in costa rica and he said, ¨I will rest in the millenium.¨Can you believe that? Hes a great example to all of us for giving EVERYTHING to the Lord. But unfortunately the first presidency insisted that he come to the states to get treatment. So he´ll be back hopefully next week. We have one of his counselors acting as the mission president right now.
Well times up, sorry i didnt get to write too much this week. But i love you all and ill talk to you soon!
Trust in the Lord!
Love, Hermana Geis

Week 33- Waterfalls and homemade cookies

Hello everyone!
I have lots to write today. Lots has happened!
So first of all, remember Floribeth? The awesome member who´s husband, Melivin, who`s like 80 got baptized like two months ago. Well he passed away :( He has been really sick, and he passed away last week. It was so sad to hear that. So we and a group of members from the branch took a car up to where they live, which is kinda far away for the funeral on wednesday. Floribeth is so strong, and we love her so much. She has been helping Melvin so much by teaching him about the gospel and always being there for them. You could tell she was really affected by his passing but is very strong and knows that she´ll see him again. She wanted to have a little ceremony for him at her house and so I got to give a talk. I was really nervous because there was like 200 people sitting outside of her house and i just stood in front and basically shouted my talk. But i felt the spirit so strongly. I talked about eternal life and how death is not the end. It was a very cool experience to be able to testify to everyone there about life after death. It was hard to see the family going through such a hard time. But they will see Melvin again.
So hermana perez and I had a really cool experience this week. We were trying to find the house of a contact we had made so we could have a lesson with him. We had the basic direction but we couldnt find his house anywhere. We were asking everybody if they knew him and everyone sent us to another place and another and i was thinking, we are wasting so much time! Why cant we find him! So we went to one house that someone else sent us to, and he had no idea who the guy we were looking for was. So we asked him if he knew anyone else that we could visit and share our message with. He said that there was a really poor family who lived close. So we went to where he said they lived and it was on the other side of what used to be a river. And it did not look easy to get over there - you have to like go down the hill and then climb up the other side. We didnt know if anyone was even home, but something was telling us to go over there. So we did, and we could tell they were very poor. The house is only wood, with a couch and chairs outside and a bunch of things on the ground outside. And they werent home! But i knew that we didnt go over there for nothing. I saw a little desk outside of the house, and decided to leave a pamphlet there, even though we have never done that haha. I pulled out a pamphlet for the plan of salvation, wrote our names and number on the back, and wrote on the front, ´¨Hola! Vamos a pasar otro dia :)¨ ("Hello! We will come back another day!" Haha! So we left that there and left. A few days later we were in the same area and we saw that they were home! They were outside of their house. We were a little hesitant, because its not a regular house where you can casually walk up to it and start talking to them - we have to go down the hill and climb up, and theyre the only house over there haha. So we yelled hola to them, and the mom yelled back, ¨Are you the ones who came here the other day?¨ ¨Si!¨ Then she laughed and said, ¨Come on over!¨ Haha so we excitedly went over and they very warmly recieved us! They said they had even read the pamphlet. AND they used to meet with the missionaries and have gone to the church once! And theyre a complete family! Who knows if they are married but we are going to pray that they are!! So basically, I know without a doubt that everything happens for a reason. If we didnt go to each house that wrongly sent us to other houses until we met the guy who gave us the reference, we NEVER would have found that family. Everything happens for a reason, every person crosses our path for a reason, and we recieve every prompting for a reason. So follow the spirit!
Thats something me and hermana perez have been focusing a lot on lately - relying on the spirit. Every time we dont know where to go or what we should do, we stop, no matter where we are, and say a prayer. I love being able to depend more on heavenly father and the holy ghost to guide us, because they know a lot more than we do.
yesterday was a good day! We went to some waterfalls with the members Vivian and Jose, who live farther away. It was so pretty, and seriously so relaxing to just sit and listen to the waterfalls. then we came home and bought a bunch of ingredients to make mom´s chocolate chip cookies!!!!! I was in heaven making those things. It was not easy finding the ingredients (like at all) or measuring the ingredients but they miraculously turned out! And i was so excited to just eat the cookie dough. It tasted like home! I explained to hna perez and marielos (we went to her house to make them) that that is the american thing to do - eat cookie dough. Haha they loved it! it was so cute, because in the closing prayer marielos said, ¨Thank you that hna geis could be connected with her mom by making her cookies¨ haha! it was so fun! first time ive eaten chocolate chip cookies in 8 months!
We bought a blender yesterday. thats a big deal. We bought a bunch of fruits and greens and are going to makes smoothies in the mornings! yay!!
This sunday i gave a talk about studying the scriptures. I was excited to talk about that because that is something that i have gained a really strong testimony about. I talked about lehis vision, and about the 3 different types of people in his dream that try to ge to the tree of life. the first group, doesnt even tough the iron rod, or the scriptures. The second group gets to the tree but then listens to the people of the world instead of the scriptures. and the third group does something different: They are CONSTANTLY holding onto the iron rod, or the word of god. Constantly is the key word. We need to constantly read the scriptures to be able to endure to the end and to come to know our heavenly father and jesus christ more. its the only way. (go read 1 nephi chapter 8) This morning, i was studying the plan of salvation and i was reading all of the scriptures that explain that doctrine. Something amazing happened. Although i didnt completely understand all of the scriptures specifically, my understanding of the plan of salvation greatly increased. Everything made more sense and i really understood fully why we are here and why we need to depend completely on Jesus Christ to return to our Heavenly Father. Even though the scriptures didnt say the exact words to explain it to me, just the act of reading the scriptures brought the spirit, which is what really taught me and helped me understand. I know that reading the scriptures will bring so much light into our lives! If we really dedicate time to them and read them every day, with real intent and a desire to learn.
Another cool thing that happened: A member gave us a reference of a worker of a shoestore. They didint even know their name, but they felt like they should tell us to go visit her. So we did, and she is awesome and is so grateful for us coming to visit her and help her grow closer to god. Moral of the story: you never know who is ready to accept the gospel! These members gave us the reference of someone they dont even know who they met in the shoestore...never doubt the impressions you get for who could be ready to accept the gospel!
A chicken entered our house this morning and left a present in our bathroom. the problems of living in nicoya...
Well thank you to everyone for your support and i love you all lots!

Love, Hermana geis
